Updated: May 13, 2020

It is with a heavy heart that I write this morning to inform you of the sudden passing of Major (Retd) Alan Howarth, who died at home on Sunday, 29 March 2020 aged 65.

Your duty done and as the duty bugler sounds 'No More Parades' take your place among your brothers-in-arms who are waiting to greet you in the FRV. Rest In Peace. Aucto Splendore Resurgo, Cede Nullis, Faithful, Swift and Bold.

For those who did not know Alan, he enlisted into the Light Infantry on 10 Dec 1968 and after training, he joined the 2nd Bn The Light Infantry. During his career served with both the 2nd and 1st Bn The Light Infantry in which he held many appointments among them were; Adjutants Bugler, Bugle Major, and RSM before being commissioned. Alan’s final appointment was as the Rifles County Secretary Yorkshire until he retired due to ill health.

Alan was hugely respected by the all who served with him and his sudden passing has come as a shock to all. Our thoughts are now with his wife, Gail, and the rest of his family and friends at this sad time.

Anyone wishing to send cards or letters of condolence is requested to send them to the Rifles Regional Office at Minden House. Office staff will then forward them to the family.
