With profound sadness, I inform members of the passing of Mr. Frederick Adamson, late 1st/4th KOYLI, who died on 12th September 2025, aged 105.

Fred served as a Lance Corporal in the KOYLI and was a Normandy veteran, having been deployed in Iceland, France, Belgium, and Holland. He received France's highest military distinction, the Chevalier de l’Ordre National de la Légion d’Honneur, on November 4, 2016. In October 1944, near the Dutch/Belgian border, he was wounded by shrapnel during a mortar attack. After the European war ended, he continued his service in Germany, Italy, and Austria, mainly focusing on policing duties. Fred always remembered his dearest friend, Ronnie McGrath, with whom he grew up in Conisborough. Ronnie was killed in action on June 26 at just 17 years old. Whenever Fred visited Normandy, he made sure to visit his friend's grave.

Fred was the eldest member of our association, held in high regard not only by all members but also by his local community and internationally. His grandson, Philip Knight, recently stood in for Fred at the 80th anniversary of the Liberation of Arnhem commemoration ceremony in Arnhem.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to Fred's family and friends during this difficult period. Please be assured that our thoughts are with you as you cope with this significant loss. The family has received numerous tributes to Fred from association members, friends, businesses, and his beloved football team, Rotherham United.

As the bugle sounds 'No More Parades' and you take your place in the FRV,

your duty done with honour and distinction.

Rest in Peace, Fred.

Cede Nullis.
