Pte Wilfred Edwards VC Unveiling of VC Centenary Stone on 16 Aug 2017 at Armley Park Leeds.

 

Civic dignitaries and members of the Regimental Association joined family of Pte Edwards for the ceremony one hundred years to the day that saw the act of bravery for which Pte Edwards was awarded the VC.  Cede Nullis. 

KOYLI/2LI Bandsmen Gather to Pay Their Respects to CSJT Frank Townend

 

They came from as far away as Portsmouth to join Frank's family and friends at his funeral in Dewsbury.  Our thanks to Frank's family and friends for their warm welcome.

Regimental Memorial Service and Lunch 2016

 

held at York Minster and afterwards at the lunch in the Mansion House.  

 

During the lunch the Marquette of a KOYLI soldier for the Memorial was unveiled by the sculptor from Yorkshire Fine Arts to rapturous applause.

Unveiling of the Commemorative VC Stone for Major CAL Yate VC KOYLI

On Friday 26 August 2016, on the anniversary of ‘The Battle of Le Cateau’ for which Major Yate was posthumously awarded the VC, a ceremony was held in his honour at Madeley’s war memorial in Russell Square. It was attended by eight representatives from the King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry (Major ‘Cal’s’ former regiment).  The representative were led by; Col(Retd) Gerry Delany, Capt David Roberts,the County Secretary (Yorkshire), Regimental Association Secretary Colin Cranswick, Ray McArdle, Stephen Winter, Pete Bate, John Crawford and Ron Lowerson.

   

Minden Day Reunion 2016

Wakefield Branch of the Regimental Association hosted this years Minden Day Reunion at the Army Reserve Centre in Wakefield.  The honoured guests were the Mayor and Mayoress of Wakefield Councillor and Mrs Harry Ellis.

 

The evening was very well attended with Association members travelling from Scotland, the North East and the Midlands.  The evenings excellent entertainment was provided by the Buglers Association and Normanton based singer Emma Dale.

Polar Bear 70th Anniversary Ceremony in Holland

​

In 1945 following the liberation of Holland and in particular the town of Ede by 4th Bn. KOYLI the towns Swimming and Water Polo Teams adopted the title of POLAR BEARS, in tribute to the 49 (WR) Infantry Division and the KOYLI of that Division whose Sign was a POLAR BEAR.

 

During the 70th Anniversary of the naming of the club a Ceremony was held in Ede on the 2nd July at the 49 (WR) Infantry Division and Canadian Army Memorial, children from the laid a Regimental Wreath at the Memorial. 

Wakefield Armed Forces Day 2016 at Pontefract Racecourse


Members of Pontefract and Wakefield combined to represent the Association at this years AFD in it new location at Pontefract Racecourse.   The Association had an excellent presence at the event with a gazebo, banners and Standards.  For the first time the Association had 4 Standards on parade and the support of more members than previous years 

​

The event this year was bigger and better than previous years and was very well attended.

LI and Rifles Reunion 2016 at Shrewsbury Town Football Stadium


Association members made their annual pilgrimage to Shrewsbury for the LI and Rifles Reunion which was again held at Shrewsbury football stadium.  The weekend was very well attended.

​

The All Ranks Dinner on the Saturday evening was attended 4 members of Wakefield Branch and their wives.  It was good to have more than one Yorkshireman there to join in the County songs.  Well done guys.

​

The Massed Bands and Bugles of The Rifles Sounding Retreat 2016


1 & 2 June 2016 on un-seasonally cold evenings the Massed Bands and Bugles of The Rifles and guests gave 2 spectacualar performances on Horse Guards 25 years since the last time The Light Division Massed Bands and Bugles performed there.

BIRTHDAY WISHES TO LIFE MEMBER OF THE ASSOCIATION

 

Former KOYLI serviceman and Life Member of the Association Cpl Neil Lowe 6515, who now lives with his family in Northants, served with 1KOYLI from 1953 to 1962 celebrated his 80th birthday on the 1st June.  His family treated him with a cake on which was the cap badge of his old regiment and played him “With Jockey to the Fair”, “Keel Row” and “Minden March”.

​

Neil is proud to have been a KOYLI and enjoyed recollecting the good times he had in Germany, Kenya, Aden and Cyprus.  Sadly Neil has suffered two major strokes and now is unable to hold a conversation but as Graham, Neil’s son, he has is memories and photographs.

​

Neil from all of us in the Regimental Association we send you our birthday greetings.  Cede Nullis.

 

Friends meet again


At the funeral of Peter Beaumont, ex KOYLI/1LI Peter's Sykes Beaumont and Jim Anderson meet again after decades since they last met.  At the wake they had a catch up over a pint.

 

In what was thought to be a Park Department Road Sweeper set to sweep the Crematorium car park before the service turned out to be our very own Paul "Sammy" Goose arriving to blow Last Post.

 

 

RBL Poppy Appeal Awards 2016


Association members from Pontefract Branch receiving their Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal Collectors Awards from Lord St Oswald at a recent ceremony.  Congratulations to each of our members.

 

KOYLI/2LI Band & Bugles Reunion 2016


The annual Band & Bugles reunion weekend took place in the Headlands Hotel in Blackpool.  At the formal dinner on the Saturday evening former Band President, Maj Andrew Penny, and his wife, Catherine, were the honoured guests.  Another new attendee was Tony Truscott who made the journey up from Kent to join us.

 

After the dinner a German Umpah Band provide the entertainment with some members entering into the spirit of the evening by dressing up.  All agreed it was one of the best Band & Bugles reunions.  Well done to Mike Fozzard and his committee.

 

Next years band & bugles reunion will be over the weekend of 7-9 April 2017.   All agree it would be great to see more 2LI band and bugles members attending. 

WWI Battlefields Tour


Association members from Yorkshire and Durham enjoyed a 4 day tour of numerous WWI Battlefields and took part in the Last Post Ceremony at Menin Gate

York Minster Service 2015


The annual KOYLI, LI and Rifles memorial service took place at York Minster on 10 October 2015 followed by a lunch at The Guild Hall.  Tim Dyas, relative of Ensign Dyas, was present at the service and lunch.

LI Association Reunion 2015


The first Light Infantry Reunion weekend to be held at Shrewsbury Football Ground.  Although the atmosphere was not the same as it had been at Sir John Moore Barracks Shrewsbury and despite some teething problems it was an excellent weekend.
